Seahawks’ colors reign at Super Sunday wedding

SEQUIM — The bride wore white.

The bride, Eve Mathis, 31, of Port Angeles made a nontraditional choice for her big day Sunday — a white Russell Wilson Seattle Seahawks jersey and a Seahawks-blue skirt.

Dan Latourette, 27, her Port Angeles groom, wore a matching blue No. 3 jersey of the Seahawks quarterback.

Mathis and Latourette tied the knot Sunday morning in the winter sun at City Pier overlooking Hollywood Beach, in front of about 20 Seahawks-clad guests.

The wedding was followed by a Super Bowl reception at Smuggler’s Landing restaurant and a Super Bowl XLVIII victory for their team against the Denver Broncos.

“It was a perfect day,” Latourette said.

The couple, who began dating about three years ago are obviously avid Seahawks fans.

“When the Seahawks game comes on, everything else has to stop,” Mathis said.

Initially, the wedding was going to be a more traditional ceremony in 2015, she said.

However, in late December, Mathis decided she didn’t want to wait and to have a smaller wedding.

Latourette agreed.

The couple set their date for Sunday because it was Groundhog Day, and neither was thinking that the Seahawks might reach the Super Bowl — or even that the date was Super Bowl weekend.

“Eve wanted a beach wedding, and I grew up going to the beach in Southern California. We wanted to do something by the water,” Latourette said.

Then the Seahawks beat New Orleans Saints in the NFC divisional round Jan. 11. That’s when the couple realized that their wedding would coincide with the Super Bowl.

Rather than reschedule, the couple decided to adopt the Seahawks theme should the Seattle team reach the big game.

The entire plan depended on forces outside of their control: The Seahawks had to win the Jan. 19 NFC championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, and the weather had to be clear for the beach wedding.

“I was pulling for it. Our whole plan was, ‘I hope they pull it off,’” Latourette said.

“When Richard Sherman tipped that pass in the end zone, I knew we were in,” he said.

That’s when Mathis special-ordered the white jersey she wore at their wedding.

“I got it as a surprise for Dan,” she said.

The Rev. Bright Warmson, Mathis’ mother, officiated in Seahawks gear, and Ken Latourette, father of the groom, served as best man.

Her daughters, Aiesha Mathis, 11, and Payton Jorgensen, 6, junior bridemaids, also wore the Seahawks’ blue and green.

Bridesmaid Siouxzie Hinton was the only non-Seahawks fan at the wedding.

She’s a big Oakland Raiders fan.

Hinton threatened to wear a Raider’s jersey under her blue and green dress but eventually decided to leave her team’s silver and black at home for the sake of the wedding.

“She took one for the team,” Mathis said.

The only fumble of the wedding was a temporary loss of Mathis’ ring.

“The wedding started late because everyone was searching for the ring,” Mathis said.

The couple eventually used a stand-in ring during the ceremony.

Eventually, 6-year-old Payton told her mother that the ring was in her bed, under the covers, to make sure it was safe.

The couple’s honeymoon will be delayed because they want to take a weekend trip to Seattle for long weekend together and a Seahawks game in the fall.

“I’m shooting for when the Niners come to town. It’s a pretty good rivalry, and the place will be rocking,” Latourette said.

Neither of the newlyweds has ever been to a professional football game.

“I’ve always wanted to go,” he said.
