PORT ANGELES — Joshua Dae Ho Carrell will receive full military honors when he is laid to rest Tuesday at Mount Angeles Memorial Park cemetery, after a motorcycle procession escorts the Navy Seabee’s body from Seattle on Saturday.
Mr. Carrell, a third class petty officer with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3 who was from Port Angeles, died of complications of malaria on Saturday in Germany. He was 23.
He had been working on a humanitarian project in Monrovia, Liberia. Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease that kills more than 1 million people every year.
Petty Officer Carrell will be honored as a veteran who died in combat, said Sandy Sinnes, Carrell’s godmother.
“He’s going to have full military honors,” Sinnes said.
Mr. Carrell’s body will be flown to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport from Dover, Del., on Saturday.
Procession
Mr. Carrell’s family will follow a motorcycle procession — featuring Patriot Guard riders displaying U.S. flags.– from Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel in Port Angeles to the Seattle airport to meet the flag-draped casket and return to Port Angeles.
The time of the procession has not been set, Sinnes said Wednesday.
Tuesday’s honor guard service at the graveside is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
It will follow a military boot ceremony with an upturned rifle and helmet scheduled for 1 p.m. at Independent Bible Church, 112 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.
Military personnel from Europe and Africa, include Carrell’s rear admiral, will be on hand.
The graveside service will feature bagpipes and a 21-gun salute.
About 400 mourners attended a service for Carrell on Tuesday at Naval Station Rota in Spain.
Mr. Carrell is survived by his mother, Rhonda; sister, Shelly; and brother, Jason; all of whom are from Port Angeles.
