PORT TOWNSEND — With the raising of the U.S. flag and a few brief speeches, the Fred Lewis Scout Cabin Association celebrated the site of a new scout cabin.
“Welcome to LeRoy Carroll Park,” said Pat McMinds, president of the Fred Lewis Scout Cabin Association at the kick-off celebration, “to the site of our new Scout Cabin, to the site of a new community center, to another wonderful year of scouting.”
Four stakes in the ground marked the corners of the new building.
“We believe it will be in place around this time next year,” she said.
“They are going to cut the logs and peel them in the winter, and in January or so, we should break ground.”
The cabin will be placed in the park thanks to a gift from American Legion Post 26, who deeded the land over to the association earlier this year.
“This event today makes me proud the legion transferred this over to the Scouts,” said Joe Carey, commander of the local legion post.
“We now have a lot of hard work ahead of us, but it is definitely worth our while.”
Scout leaders, Scouts, legion members, representatives of Elks Lodge No. 317 and members of the community showed up for the celebration and picnic lunch.
