School board appointee also candidate for Chimacum seat

Father of two fills open seat, will run unopposed this fall

CHIMACUM — The Chimacum School Board unanimously approved the appointment of Mike Aman to the board for the District 2 position, a seat he also is seeking in the November election.

Aman ran unsuccessfully for the position in the 2019 general election against Mikey Nagy to fill the two-year unexpired term. Nagy resigned from the position in early May; the term is completed at the end of this year.

Aman is running unopposed for the position in the Nov. 2 general election this fall for a full four-year term.

The school board interviewed Aman publicly Wednesday night and voted to appoint him after a short executive session.

He was sworn in immediately by acting Superintendent David Engle.

Aman, a Class of 1987 Chimacum High School alumnus, has lived in the Chimacum/Port Hadlock area most of his life and has been working at Carl’s Building Supply for the past 22 years, he said Wednesday.

Aman has raised two children who attended schools in the district. One graduated in 2019 and the other will graduate this year, he said.

Aman said he wants to be more engaged with the community and help draft policies that will benefit students.

“I really wanted to give back to our community and be more involved than I have over the past two years,” he said. “This was one area that I really felt strongly about being more involved with.”

Aman said he has been active in the school district over the years, being part of the Chimacum Band Boosters Association, Big Blue Association for sports and graduation, a parent chaperone, a parent supporter of the band, cheer and drama programs, as well as part of the superintendent search that hired Scott Mauk, who will step into the role on July 1.

Board president Kristina Mayer was happy to welcome Aman to the board.

“I just want to say thank you to Mike,” she said. “He ran in the election last time. He did not win, but he came back strong and steady, ready to serve, so I really appreciate that.”
