Schoenfeldt challenging Beil for Port of Port Angeles seat

PORT ANGELES — Longtime Port advisory committee member George Schoenfeldt announced Tuesday that he will run in November for the District 2 Port commissioner seat currently held by Leonard Beil.

“I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while,” Schoenfeldt said.

“I’ve been involved with the Port for 20 years.

“I’m 56 years old; my last kid is leaving home. If I’m going to do this, now is the time.”

Schoenfeldt said he was surprised when Beil announced he was seeking re-election.

Live in same district

But he must run against Beil if he wants the seat because they both live in District 2, which covers central Clallam County.

The Port operates airports in Sekiu and Port Angeles, marinas in Port Angeles and Sequim, four marine services terminals, one ferry terminal and a 110-acre industrial park.

Schoenfeldt said he has traveled around public ports throughout Puget Sound and along the West Coast, seeing how they operate.

He said he wants to use that experience to make a difference in how the countywide public port district operates, adding he has no specific initiatives yet.

Wise use of tax authority

Wise use of the Port’s taxing authority is vital for the benefit of Clallam County, Schoenfeldt said.

“I will make sure that any money spent will have a beneficial effect for the citizens of our county,” he said.
