SAPPHO — A 14-year-old boy was recovering at a Seattle hospital Wednesday morning after being injured in a motorcycle wreck near Sappho.
Jacob T. Hull, of Sappho was in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Hull was wearing a helmet, a State Patrol report said.
According to the report, Hull was riding a red Honda XR100R dirt bike type motorcycle at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, and attempted to cross U.S. Highway 101 from south to north about a mile east of Sappho. As Hull crossed the highway, he was struck by a westbound 2009 Hyundai Elantra, driven by Carolyn S. Brandis, 64, of Forks.
Hull was injured, and was transported by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Brandis was not hurt.
Riding an off-road bike off-road is legal for a 14-year-old, but users of off-road motorcycles and four-wheeled all-terrain vehicles are limited to crossing in certain areas, such as where established trails or dirt roads cross the highway, said Trooper Russ Winger, spokesman for the State Patrol.
Typically the rider of a dirt bike is legally required to dismount and walk it across the highway, Winger said.
The circumstances of the wreck were unclear, but the initial indications were that Hull is at fault, he said.
The wreck remained under investigation.
