QUILCENE — A Canadian motorcycle rider remained in serious condition in a Seattle hospital Tuesday, while another rider, also from Alberta, was discharged from Jefferson Healthcare after a Monday wreck on U.S. Highway 101.
Daryl A. Krause, 65, of Spruce Grove, Alberta, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with a possible head injury after the 3:34 p.m. wreck 6 miles south of Quilcene.
He was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit Tuesday, a hospital spokesperson said.
Bruce I. Lemont, 58, of Nisku, Alberta, who was taken to Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend with cuts and bruises, was treated and discharged Monday.
The wreck happened at the same spot where a motor home went off the road Sunday night.
Sand on the road was cited as a contributing factor in Monday’s crash, State Patrol Trooper Russ Winger said.
Winger said an investigation showed the sand was left over from the cleanup of the motor-home wreck, which sent Carol Dunlap of Port Angeles to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Dunlap was listed in satisfactory condition Tuesday.
Winger said several warning signs urging motorcyclists to use extreme caution were posted prior to the crash.
The two Canadians were traveling south with five other motorcyclists on a road trip to southern California.
As the two cyclists, riding parallel at the head of the group, rounded a curve near Milepost 300, they spun out because of sand on the road, the State Patrol said.
Trooper Matt Phillips, who investigated the wreck at the scene, said both men hit the curve at about the same time.
Lemont jumped off his bike.
Krause rolled several times and was ejected from the bike, Phillips said.
After being cleared by the State Patrol, the five remaining bikers rode to Port Townsend to visit Lemont.
