PORT ANGELES — The Salvation Army will break ground for a new social service building at noon today.
The ceremony will be at the site of the future facility at 123 S. Peabody St., which once housed NAPA Auto Parts.
The building is catty-corner from the present Salvation Army building.
Once completed in 2015, it will house a commercial kitchen, a 175-seat dining room, a shower and laundry, a food pantry, warehouse space and administrative offices.
Other Salvation Army offices will remain at their present location.
The move expands facilities, including the dining room, and will allow the agency to do more work for youths, as well as more recovery programs and education classes, the agency said.
More than $900,000 for the $1.4 million project has been raised, Salvation Army officials said.
Hoch Construction of Port Angeles has been awarded the contract. Design work was done by Lindberg and Smith Architects of Port Angeles.
The Salvation Army serves free meals Mondays through Fridays: breakfast from 8:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. and lunch from noon to 1 p.m.
In 2013, the Salvation Army served more than 52,000 meals. It provides food to more than 300 families each month through its pantry.
The Salvation Army has church services at 11 a.m. Sundays.
