A pair of salutes to the late folk icon Pete Seeger will fill Sequim and Port Townsend venues with song tonight and Friday night.
First comes the open-mic session at Nourish restaurant, 1345 S. Sequim Ave. in Sequim, where there’s no cover charge for the
6 p.m. gathering.
Nourish hosts this open mic night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. every Wednesday, while this week’s is a special edition devoted to Seeger, who died last month at 94.
Next it’s “Turn, Turn, Turn: A Tribute to Pete Seeger,” an evening with Daniel Deardorff, Judith-Kate Friedman and other singers and players at Port Townsend’s Key City Playhouse on Friday.
Tickets are $15 to the 7:30 p.m. event, which will also include local artists Laurence Cole, Aimee Ringle, Aimee Kelley and the Songweavers trio along with JJ Jenkins, Joe Breskin, Kat Eggleston and host Marcia Perlstein.
The evening will be about well- and lesser-known songs and stories spanning Seeger’s 70-plus years of performance and activism, Friedman promised.
“The way Seeger . . . involved everyone in singing together has informed me ever since I first heard him when I was in high school,” she added.
Friedman is director of Port Townsend’s nonprofit Songwriting Works, coproducer with Key City Public Theatre of Friday’s Seeger tribute.
“Pete Seeger used his gifts as a troubadour to move our world forward, together, through song,” Friedman said, noting that the folk singer’s activism encompassed the causes of peace, workers’ rights, environmental stewardship and racial and economic justice.
“He said: ‘Participation is what’s going to save the human race,’” Friedman added.
She emphasized that those who come Friday night will have abundant opportunity to sing together.
