PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Food Bank on Saturday picked up food donated by customers at a Safeway store that was one of many participating in food drives as part of a nationwide corporate effort, officials said.
Jason Ostrand, manager of the Safeway store at 2709 E. U.S. Highway 101, was one of a half-dozen Safeway employees and other volunteers who helped load donated bags of food into a food bank truck that afternoon as part of Safeway’s “Help Us End Hunger” food drive.
The food drive, started in November and running until Christmas, allows Safeway shoppers to buy $10 bags of food, each of which translates into six meals at the Port Angeles Food Bank, Ostrand said.
As of Saturday, Ostrand said the Highway 101 Safeway has sold just more than 1,000 bags of food and sold 129 last Saturday, Dec. 15.
“We’re hoping to break 200 today,” Ostrand said.
Other North Olympic Peninsula Safeways are at 110 E. Third St. in Port Angeles, 680 W. Washington St. in Sequim and 442 W. Sims Way in Port Townsend.
