VICTORIA, B.C. — The Royal Canadian Navy’s Maritime Forces Pacific will conduct Exercise Trident Fury in and around southern Vancouver Island from Monday through June 29.
The multinational maritime training exercise will be conducted across multiple locations in the Salish Sea, including southern Vancouver Island and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, according to a Royal Canadian Navy press release.
The public can expect to hear and see increased military activity, including ships and aircraft, in the area.
The exercise will include Canadian Halifax-class frigates, Victoria-class submarines, Harry DeWolf-class offshore patrol vessels and Kingston-class coastal defense vessels as well as ships and small boats from the United States and Mexico.
There also will be small boat maneuvers, diving operations and aircraft operations in Constance Bank, a shallow area in the Strait of Juan de Fuca about 3 nautical miles south of Victoria.
Canadian naval exercises are guided by strict marine mammal mitigation measures which exist to limit acoustic impacts to marine mammals, particularly Southern Resident Killer Whales.
Activities are stopped if whales are observed nearby and do not recommence until the area is clear, the navy said.
