The Port Angeles Skate Park under construction at Erickson Playfield should be open by Labor Day, according to Nor’wester Rotary Club members spearheading the project.
Contractor Dreamland Skatepark Design and Construction of Oregon is a couple of weeks ahead of schedule, said Nor’wester Rotary Club member Doc Reiss.
“The contractor is due to be done by Aug. 1 with its work,” Reiss said.
“Then there’s the kiosk, concession stand, fencing and landscaping.
“So that’s about three weeks. It should be done before school starts.”
Fundraising to continue
Nor’wester Rotary Club member Steve Zenovic said fundraising efforts will continue after the new recreation spot opens.
But people have told the club that it can borrow money if necessary to complete the project, he said.
“We’re going to open it up, that’s a given. We’ve secured the money to do it,” Zenovic said.
“We’ve got a lot of things in the works. People told us it’s really important to get it built.”
The skatepark is costing $200,000 plus an undetermined amount of in-kind services.
Reiss said the club still has contributions coming in and still has fundraising challenges out.
Upcoming fundraisers include a raffle for a skatepark quilt and a carwash from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Port Angeles McDonald’s, 1708 E. Front St.
Donations also can be made to “Nor’wester Rotary Skatepark” at any First Federal Savings and Loan branch.
“We’re doing well. There’s no opportunity for the park not to open, it will be there,” Reiss said, adding a request to those who made pledges to please fulfill them.
Reiss said who will operate the concession stand — which will rent safety equipment, such as helmets and pads — hasn’t been figured determined.
It might operate similar to those at the baseball fields, with concessionaires using the stand as needed, he said.
