PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Democrats will commemorate the 80th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s trip to the Olympic Peninsula during the annual Democratic Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner on Oct. 20.
The dinner and silent auction will be at 7 Cedars Casino in Blyn. A meet-and-greet is set from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by dinner and a program from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
History buff Mike Doherty, a former county commissioner, will present a summary of Roosevelt’s trip, which began Sept. 30, 1937.
Arriving in Port Angeles by U.S. naval destroyer, Roosevelt and his party drove through town, where he was greeted by hundreds of area residents and schoolchildren gathered in front of the 1915 courthouse. He spent the night at the Lake Crescent Hotel. The next day, Roosevelt visited Forks and Kalaloch and lunched at Lake Quinault Lodge.
Roosevelt’s extensive legacy on the Peninsula and in the Pacific Northwest will be discussed, including the creation of Olympic National Park, Civilian Conservation Corps camps, the Grand Coulee Dam and rural electrification.
Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson is the event’s keynote speaker.
Rep. Mike Chapman, D-Port Angeles, will serve as master of ceremonies.
Tickets purchased by Tuesday are $55 per person; they will be $60 thereafter. Table reservations (eight people) cost $440 through Tuesday and $480 after that date.
Tickets can be purchased at Democratic headquarters at 124-A W. First St., Port Angeles; online at www.clallamdemocrats.org; or at Port Book and News, 104 E. First St., Port Angeles.
