PORT ANGELES — Karen Rogers announced today that she won’t seek re-election to the Port Angeles City Council when her current term expires.
Her statement:
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve as your city council member and Mayor. In the roles of both council member and Mayor it has been an honor to represent our City at local, regional, state, federal, tribal and international venues.
After 8 years, it is time to move on. I will not be seeking another term on council. I look forward to the rest of this year to finish working for our community.
Since my first election to council in 2001, I have worked hard to provide leadership and support to our city in the areas of infrastructure, economic development, tourism and national security. Major projects that were accomplished during my tenure as city council member and Mayor include; the new 8th street Bridges, the Elwha Dam
Removal Project, the Gateway, downtown sidewalks and water main projects, major sewer extensions for both the Eastern and Western UGA’s, the recruitment of Westport and Port Angeles Hardwood Mill, Senior Center Expansion, Fiber Optics, the Passport issue, the retention of the Coho Ferry Terminal location in Victoria, the settlement of Tse Whitzen Village, HarborWorks PDA and the celebration for Angeles Composite Technology Inc for the national recognition of winning the Department of Defense Nunn Perry award.
During my service on council the City saw growth and challenges along with opportunities and innovation. I learned much about public administration and would like to recognize and thank each and every City of Port Angeles employee who work diligently everyday to make our City the best place to live, have a business and raise a family. I thank each of them for teaching me and for their patience as we dedicated ourselves to improving our City. I am forever grateful to each of them and will always hold them in the highest regard.
Serving on the Association of Washington Cities these past five years is another highlight of my time on council. In 2008, I was elected President of the Association of Washington Cities, an honor of additional responsibility that I am enjoying tremendously. AWC staff members dedicate themselves to working to ensure we can govern and lead our cities in the best way possible and I thank them for all their help and their friendship.
I will remain active in our community and will be a diligent advocate for economic
development. Additionally I will continue serving in my roles for the Peninsula College
Foundation, the Clallam Business Incubator and the OMC Foundation and other philanthropic interests. I remain optimistic about the future of Port Angeles and the Peninsula. I look forward to new opportunities and to seeking new challenges.
