CHIMACUM — The 2019 Rhododendron Festival Coronation ceremony scheduled for Saturday has been postponed due to weather.
It has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Chimacum High School auditorium, 91 W. Valley Road.
Three high school women are vying for the title of Rhody Queen: Kaylee Krajewski, 16, a sophomore at Port Townsend High School; Mary Neville, 15, a sophomore at Jefferson Community School; and Ellienne Thornton, 17, a junior at Port Townsend High School.
The women are judged by their public speaking ability, judges’ and committee interviews, and creativity, speech and answers to impromptu questions during the coronation ceremony. The queen will receive a $1,500 scholarship and each princess will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The Greatest Rhody, the theme of the 84th Rhododendron Festival, will begin May 15, and the grand parade and carnival will be May 18.
According to Brandi Hamon, president of the Rhododendron Festival Association, a site for the carnival is still being determined.
“We are still looking for a home for the carnival,” Hamon said. “We are working logistics right now and considering interim locations. We’ve been working with the county and city of Port Townsend, the Port of Port Townsend and Jefferson Transit. The amount of support we have received is amazing and Commissioner Kate Dean has been instrumental in the efforts.”
