PORT ANGELES — A restitution hearing for Gary Carl Borneman, the Port Angeles man who pleaded guilty to the 2014 murder of Jerry Howell and kidnapping of Rebecca Messinger, was rescheduled Wednesday for Jan. 15.

Borneman is serving a 34-year, 10-month prison sentence for tying his ex-girlfriend to the passenger seat of a vehicle before shooting Howell to death in a close-quarters gunfight at a Port Angeles residence in October 2014.

Borneman, 41, is being held at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton.

Harry Gasnick of Clallam Public Defender moved for a continuance on behalf of defense attorney John Hayden in a Wednesday court hearing.

Borneman has a new counselor and Hayden has been having “communications issues” with his client, Gasnick said.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Brian Coughenour granted the continuance and signed an order finding cause to extend the restitution hearing to Feb. 1 if necessary.

Borneman pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with a firearm enhancement and first-degree kidnapping March 11.

He was sentenced April 1.
