PORT ANGELES — The city of Port Angeles has announced that Roglin’s, Inc., of Aberdeen, has begun structural repairs to the observation tower at City Pier.
The tower has been closed since November, when significant structural failures were discovered during a routine maintenance inspection.
The failures, caused by saltwater corrosion, created the potential for imminent collapse of the tower and pose serious risk to public safety and surrounding property.
“We are excited to see the observation tower repaired and reopened for public use,” said Corey Delikat, director of parks and recreation. “We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we work to ensure the safety and longevity of this beloved landmark. I want to especially thank our Public Works & Utilities Department, which has been instrumental in making this project a priority.”
The repair project involves replacing four column supports, connections between wooden pilings and the tower and, as needed, wood decking.
Roglin’s will also temporarily shroud the tower to contain residue while they remove paint and recoat the structure.
The tower and portions of the City Pier will remain closed until repairs are complete, which is currently expected to be in June; no other disruptions to pedestrian, vehicular or marine traffic are anticipated.
The project is funded by $574,464 in city lodging tax funds.
