Monday marks “Read Across America,” and it will be celebrated at schools across Jefferson and Clallam counties with read-a-thons and other events.
Organized by the National Education Association, it is the biggest one-day literacy celebration in the country.
It also celebrates the 99th anniversary of the birth of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
Community leaders, teachers and school staff members will read to students.
Students will be encouraged to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character.
Red and white stovepipe hats like those in Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat will be distributed.
This sixth annual event also marks the first major effort for the Clallam County Literacy Council.
“Read Across America” events were organized by the county’s school districts in association with the council, chaired by Ann Brewer as part of Clallam County United Way’s Healthy Communities program.
“We are working as a networking group to spread awareness of literacy problems throughout the county,” Brewer said.
