Rally set in Sequim to support abortion rights

Similar rally scheduled in Port Townsend earlier in the day

SEQUIM — A rally in support of abortion rights is planned at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the corner of North Sequim Avenue and East Washington Street in Sequim.

The rally is organized by Planned Parenthood, Party for Socialism & Liberation (PSL), other social justice organizations and concerned community members, according to Carlos Osorio.

The rally is “to stand in solidarity with a national call to action by Planned Parenthood to defend abortion rights and access in cities across the country,” he said in a press release issued late Thursday.

“This will be a community-driven response to the Senate failing to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act which would have protected and legalized abortion rights nationwide,” he said.

Another rally is set from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the triangle — Kearney Street/Jefferson Street/East Sims Way — in Port Townsend.

Indivisible is supporting Planned Parenthood protests all over the country on Saturday to protest the Supreme Court’s draft decision that would nullify Roe v. Wade, law of the land for half a century, that upheld the right to safe, legal abortions and return the power to legislate abortion to the individual states.

Sequim will host its Grand Finale of the Irrigation Festival at the same time as this rally, so Indivisible Sequim and Voices for Health & Healing are joining Indivisible Port Townsend at their rally.

The Sequim Irrigation Festival Grand Parade is set from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Voices for Health & Healing is organizing a car caravan to carry people over to Port Townsend to join the rally.
