RainFest begins Friday in Forks

FORKS — Rain or shine, the people of Forks this weekend will celebrate the wet weather for which they are famous — or, perhaps, infamous.

The annual RainFest will include a quilt show, storytelling and an umbrella decorating workshop.

Events will kick off Friday with the Fabric of the Forest Quilt Show at the Forks High School Auxiliary gym, 261 S. Spartan Ave., which will be from noon to 6 p.m.

Umbrella decorating will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Peninsula College, 71 S. Forks Ave., with the “Impromptu” Umbrella Parade beginning at noon.

Quilts accepted today

Quilts for the show will be accepted today from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., said Marcia Yanish, who is in charge of the quilting events.

Former RainFest participants who would like to display finished quilts from previous classes are also eligible to have their quilts in the show, she said.

Those who are interested in quilting classes may register prior to the festival or at the festival, but signing up in advance is advised so materials may be bought and fabric cut in preparation, Yanish said.

Roxanne Carter, a nationally known quilter from Mulkilteo, will lead classes at this year’s Fabric of the Forest quilt show at RainFest.

Carter is known for her patterns, as well as for having developed simplified ways of doing difficult patterns, said Yanish

Carter will teach a class on a falling stars pattern from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and another on twirling tulips from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Each class will be $50 dollars, Yanish said.

Lecture, trunk show

Carter will also give a lecture and trunk show at 7:30 p.m. Friday for $15.

All of the classes and events will be at the Department of Natural Resources Conference Center, 411 Tillicum Lane.

“Roxanne is bringing more than 100 quilts for the lecture,” Yanish said.

“She is so talented and the quilts are so great, I know people will enjoy it.

“There are so many patterns I know people will enjoy seeing it, rather than just listening to a lecture about patterns.

“This way they can really appreciate the quilts.”

Quilted Strait, 139 W. First St. in Port Angeles; Viking Sew & Vac, 707 E. First St. in Port Angeles; and Sequim Vacuum & Sewing Center, 609 W. Washington St.; all will have brochures available, Yanish said.

Registration forms are available online at www.piecemakersquiltclub.org, at Chinook Pharmacy, 11 N. Forks Ave., Forks Outfitters, 950 S. Forks Ave.
