QUILCENE — The emergency lights of a fire truck flash, yellow hoses lay uncoiled and four firefighters spray a thick jet of water off the boat ramp of the Quilcene Marina.
But there is no fire in sight.
And the firefighters are not professionals, but students attending their last class of the day through a cadet training program offered by Jefferson County Fire District No. 2.
The yearlong class, which has been offered for the last 3½ years, teaches students the ins and outs of fighting fires, from combating a backdraft to properly stowing hundreds of yards of hose aboard a truck.
Eight students from Quilcene High School are currently enrolled in the class, which runs five days a week.
