Quilcene Heritage Days combined with the Brinnon Loyalty Day parade makes this a special south Jefferson County weekend.
Events kick off today at 1 p.m. in Brinnon, when schoolchildren, community leaders and business owners appear in the Brinnon Loyalty Day parade.
The parade has been marched each year since 1983.
A bit of Quilcene history is on tap for the remainder of the weekend.
This year’s event recognizes 50 years of service by the men and women of the Quilcene Volunteer Fire Department, also known as Jefferson County Fire District No. 2.
Visitors to the event can expect to see a lot more diversity than in previous years, organizer Becky Anderson said Thursday.
Quilcene is at milepost 295 on U.S. Highway 101, about 15 miles south of Discovery Bay. Brinnon is located an additional 10 miles south.
“We’ve really seen the community get behind us this year,” she said.
Within walking distance
Events are spread throughout a mile-long stretch of town, making everything within easy walking distance.
“The salmon feed is going to be big,” Anderson said when asked about the main highlights.
“And hearing people telling their stories and seeing the historic slides — getting a glimpse of times past.”
The Lions Club sponsors a traditional salmon dinner with corn, Caesar salad and bread for $8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Historical Museum, 151 E. Columbia St., off Center Road.
A bluegrass concert at the high school Saturday night also promises to be a big draw, Anderson said.
From 6 to 9 p.m., the Andy Mackie Music Foundation and county Parks and Recreation Department welcome Luck of the Draw, Smoke Creek, Crabgrass and Bud Brewer and Friends. Tickets at $5; people younger than 18 are free.
Heritage Days starts with Liberty, a Southern Gospel men’s quartet, appearing for free at Quilcene High School, 294715 U.S. Highway 101 at 7 tonight.
The Quilcene Heritage Days schedule appears in Peninsula Spotlight, included in this edition of Peninsula Daily News.
