Public comment period opens for cleanup at former Rayonier Mill site

Open house scheduled next month at Field Hall

PORT ANGELES — The state Department of Ecology has opened the public comment period on the Rayonier Mill cleanup.

The 60-day window to review and comment on documents related to the site located on the east side of Port Angeles Harbor starts today and runs through Aug. 12.

The Department of Ecology will hold a public meeting and open house from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 8 in the Donna M. Morris Theater at Field Arts & Events Hall, 201 W. Front St.

The Rayonier pulp mill operated almost 70 years until it closed in 1997. Between 1998-2008, Rayonier removed 30,000 tons of contaminated material created by its operations.

The draft interim action plan proposed by the Department of Ecology outlines how Rayonier will clean up the remaining contaminated areas.

That plan, along with a consent decree for Rayonier to carry it out and a state Environmental Police Act (SEPA) determination of non-significance are the documents for which the department is seeking public comment.

To review the documents, go to tinyurl.com/3z9fjfp9. They also can be viewed at the Port Angeles Main Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

The public can comment online, by email to marian.abbett@ecy.wa.gov or by regular mail to Marian Abbett, site manager, state Department of Ecology, P.O. Box 47775, Olympia, WA 98504-7775.
