SEQUIM — The Clallam County prosecuting attorney will decide if charges should be filed against a 17-year-old high school student in connection with a small fire in a school restroom on Jan. 9.
The Sequim High School student, who is not identified because he is a minor, was arrested on investigation of reckless burning in the first degree and malicious mischief in the first degree.
He was arrested and released to his parents’ custody on Jan. 9, and the case has been referred to the prosecutor’s office, the Sequim Police Department reported.
A custodian quickly extinguished the fire that broke out in a boys’ restroom in the H Building on the Sequim High School campus at 601 N. Sequim Ave., police reported.
Students were evacuated from the building for about two hours.
A toilet paper roll had been set on fire, police said.
The boy confessed to starting the fire, police said.
No one was injured. The toilet paper holder was melted, and stall wall destroyed, police said.
“There was some minor smoke damage to one of the stalls, and some very minor building damage,” said Roger Moeder, assistant chief at Clallam County Fire District No. 3.
It appeared to have been set on purpose, Moeder said.
The student reported the fire to a teacher just before fire alarms went off.
