Proposed levy topic of Quillayute Valley School Board meeting tonight

FORKS — Quillayute Valley School Board will discuss tonight a two-year replacement maintenance and operations levy that it hopes to place on the Feb. 8 ballot.

The meeting to discuss details of the levy, will be at 6 p.m. at 411 S. Spartan Ave., Forks.

No decision is set to be made at the meeting tonight.

The deadline to place a measure on the Feb. 8 ballot is Dec. 23, said Clallam County Auditor Patty Rosand.

The present two-year levy, passed in February 2009, will expire at the end of next year.

The current levy raises $570,000 per year with a rate of $1.02 per $1,000 assessed valuation, said Superintendent Diana Reaume.

That means the owner of a $200,000 home pays about $204 in taxes per year.

Because of a combination of property values and other taxes, the rate decreased from its original $1.16 per $1,000 in 2009 even though the amount raised stayed the same.

“I can’t say for sure, of course, but right now, we aren’t thinking we will have to raise it this year,” Reaume said.

The board will discuss whether to propose a two-year or four-year year levy, as well as discussing whether or not to raise the amount.

“We think that unless there are some huge cuts announced by the governor that we will not have to raise it,” Reaume said.

“It makes up about 12 percent of our budget, so it doesn’t make up quite as much as other districts.”

Districts are legally allowed to have levies make up 28 percent of their budgets.

The levy passed in 2009 replaced a four-year levy of the same amount.

During the same 2009 election, the school district passed the $11 million bond to replace portions of the high school which had been in longtime disrepair.

The $11 million was matched with about $7 million in state funds.
