PORT ANGELES — “Ice Hockey: Energy on Ice” by Sandis Kondrats of Latvia won first place in the ninth annual Windermere Sand Sculpture Classic contest at Hollywood Beach.

The theme for the contest at Hollywood Beach was “Wonderful World of Sports.”

The contest is part of the Nor’wester Rotary Arts in Action festival, which continues today.

Sand gallery admission is $2. Vendors, a car show and music are all also available at Arts in Action at Lincoln Street and Railroad Avenue.

Sue McGrew of Tacoma won second place in the sand sculpture contest with “The Evolution of Sports,” while Karen Fralich of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, won third place with a snowboarder piece.

The Sculptors’ Choice was a tie between McGrew’s piece and “Sumo” by Carl Jara of Cleveland.

All eight sculptors were paid $1,000 to show up and finish.

Contest winners received additional money: $300 for first place, $200 for second place, $100 for third place and $100 each for the two who tied for Sculptors’ Choice.

Judging was done Saturday by Port Angeles City Manager Kent Myers, home health nurse Barbara Wise, Laurel Black of Laurel Black Design and Steve Tharinger, Clallam County commissioner and state representative for the 24th District, which includes the North Olympic Peninsula.

Judges were under the guidance of world master sand sculptor Charlie Beaulieu of Kingston.

The People’s Choice award will be announced at the end of the festival, based on quarters that visitors leave in the boxes next to their favorite sculptures.
