Prize-winning band selling flower baskets as Port Angeles fundraiser

PORT ANGELES — The Northwinds Homeschool Band is selling hanging flower baskets, to be ready for Mother’s Day.

Band members have planted more than 400 baskets to raise funds for their next performance tour.

The baskets are $30 each, with discounts for larger orders.

Each 10-inch cedar planter contains a geranium, viola, nemesia, dianthus, pansy, dusty miller and two alyssum, lobelia and petunias.

To order, phone 360-452-7189.

The nonprofit Northwinds Homeschool Band, led by director Dan Tutton, recently returned from Southern California, where the band participated in the Anaheim Heritage Festival.

The band competed with bands from all over the Western U.S. and received several awards.

Band awards

The Advanced Band and Jazz Band earned gold-level rating awards for their performances at the festival, which was held March 28-29.

The full band, with students ranging in age from 8 to 18, earned a silver award, being adjudicated with bands at the high school level.

The Northwinds band program also won the “Spirit of Anaheim” award, given to a music program that best represents its community in terms of character, discipline and professionalism both on and off the stage.

In addition, two Northwinds students, David Kennedy and Jacob Kennedy, received “Maestro” awards for outstanding solos.

While on tour, the band also performed at Disneyland and California Adventure theme parks, and participated in two Disney film soundtrack recording session workshops.

The band has also taken performance tours to Washington, D.C.; Idaho; British Columbia; and within Washington state.

The Northwinds Homeschool Band is committed to providing a foundational music opportunity for home-schooled children.
