PREP TRACK: Martin, Harrison break records at Olympic League championships; Port Angeles boys team titlists

POULSBO — Records continued to fall at the second and final day of the Olympic League track and field championships Saturday.

The Port Angeles boys won the meet with 144 points as Troy Martin shattered the meet record in the discus by seven feet with a throw of 173 feet, 10 inches.

Two days after setting a new meet mark of her own in the triple jump (34 feet, 10 inches), Sequim’s Haleigh Harrison set a new school record in the girls high jump as well on Saturday.

Clearing the bar by 5 feet, 5 inches, the sophomore jumper broke her own personal-best mark by one inch on her way to an individual title.

The jump was the second-best submitted in Class 2A this spring, just one inch shy of Fife’s Lateah Holmes.

“Very, very pleased with the team as a whole” said coach Brad Moore, whose boys and girls both finished third at the meet (see results on Page B2).

“We are a smaller team, so it was great to have such a strong showing for both the boys and the girls.”

Harrison was named one of the female athletes of the meet, while Martin was co-male athlete of the meet for winning both the shot put and discus.

Martin is the lone 2A thrower to toss the discus more than 170 feet this season.

His season-best mark of 175-8 is a school record.

The person whose record he beat on Saturday, Sequim’s B.J. Schade (166-4 in 1994), was also someone Martin received coaching tips from this spring.

“Troy is one of those kids that he accepts everyone’s ideas, thinks about it and benefits from that,” Port Angeles coach Pat Durr said. “It’s kind of nice.”

Of course, Martin was just one of the league champion Rider boys to shine on Saturday.

Parley Scott won the triple jump and took third in the 110 meter hurdles, the long jump, and the 400-meter dash.

Meanwhile, teammate Cameron Braithwaite took home first in the long jump and fourth in javelin and triple jump.

Ian Ward placed second in the boys high jump for the Riders as well as third in the boys triple jump.

Fellow senior Rickie Porter placed third in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

All told, the Riders had nine third-place finishers at the meet.

“Three was the lucky number for us,” Durr said.

“We have a couple of exceptional athletes like Troy, Parley and Cameron, but the support cast really came through. That’s why the boys won.

“Everybody stepped up.”

Frank Catelli took home second place in both the shot put and javelin and finished third in discus for the Sequim boys.

Sequim’s Audrey Lichten finished first in the 800 and second in the 1,600 and 3,200. She had personal-best times in the 800 and 3,200.

Taylor Bonneau finished second in the 200 meters for the Sequim boys, also setting a personal-best time.

The Port Angeles girls team finished behind Sequim in fourth place with a score of 74.5.

Rider Katelyn Noard was second in the girls javelin, while Kathryn Moseley finished third in the 400 and fourth in the 200.

Tarah Erickson placed first in the pole vault for the Port Angeles girls and fifth in the triple jump.

Port Townsend’s Bereket Piatt came in second in the 1,600 and 3,200, while teammate Habtamu Rubio finished right behind him for third place in both.

The Redskins duo was beaten out by Kingston’s Nicholas Schippers in both races. His time of 4 minutes, 22.30 seconds in the 1,600 broke a 19-year-old meet record.

Port Townsend’s boys finished sixth at the meet while the girls took home eighth.

Olympic League 2A Track athletes meet next Saturday, May 14 for sub-districts, held at the Port Angeles track at 11 a.m.
