PREP SOCCER: Chimacum boys shock rival Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — The Chimacum boys soccer team finally got its shot at its archrivals.

After more than four years without a match against Port Townsend, and eight total without a win, it was well worth the wait.

The Cowboys scored two goals in the first 41 minutes then held off the Redskins’ desperate attempts at a rally to earn a 2-0 nonleague win at Memorial Field on Wednesday night.

“Everybody on that pitch worked hard,” Chimacum coach Kevin Coate said. “We earned the victory.”

Kobi Albright and Chris Pieper each scored unassisted goals to help Chimacum (0-1-1 in league, 1-3-1 overall) to its first win of the season.

Albright’s came on a free kick in the 17th minute, while Pieper scored off a show-stopping effort seconds into the second half.

“He beat two defenders and took a shot and put it over the keeper’s hands to the far post,” Coate said. “It was a great individual effort.”

Port Townsend, which spent most of the first half on its heels, frantically tried to find the back of the net in the final 20 minutes.

But sweeper Renns Bresser and company kept the winless Redskins (0-5-1 overall) from getting many good opportunities in the final third of the field.

The Cowboys’ goalkeeper only had to make two saves all game.

The match marked the first time the two teams had met in more than four years on the pitch.

“I’m glad we got the game because these kids all know each other and they play together [during club season],” Coate said.

“It was a good rivalry.”

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders might want to start calling Wally Sigmar Athletic Complex home.

Port Angeles (0-0-1 in league, 5-2-1) continued its torrid start to the season with its fifth win in six games, including the second in three at the college’s new artificial turf field.

“This is definitely my best starting record by far,” seventh-year Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.

“We don’t want to get too carried away because we’ve only played one game that counts.”

Kyle Bingham scored a pair of goals and exchange student Kurbanjan Mamat added two of his own and an assist as the offensive players of the match,

Sam Beasley was given defensive player of the match honors in the nonleague victory.

Port Angeles’ next match isn’t until April 12 when it travels to Bremerton for an Olympic League tilt.
