CHIMACUM — The Chimacum softball team swept a surprisingly feisty Forks Spartans squad in a nonleague doubleheader Friday afternoon.
The Cowboys (3-1 in league, 7-2 overall) won their fourth and fifth games in a row after dropping the Spartans 5-3 and 8-5 in back-to-back contests.
Chimacum head coach Mike Miller came away feeling lucky to score two wins against the Spartans.
After all, starting pitcher Hannah Baird walked 12 batters in her Game 1 victory, one that saw the Spartans strand countless runners.
“I don’t know how we won that one,” Chimacum coach Mike Miller said.
“They played pretty good defense when they had to. They got the right plays at the right time. That’s kind of saved our bacon.”
Baird ended up striking out five in six innings of work before giving way to Cydney Nelson for the save in seventh.
Kaitlyn Cadero followed that up with five solid innings in a shortened Game 2 win.
Cailey Snyder smashed a two-run homer in the first game to lead the Cowboy bats.
Kailey Castillo and Megan Dukek each had two hits in Game 2, the second of two losses in a valiant effort from Spartan hurler Jillian Raben.
The Forks sophomore tossed all 11 innings in the doubleheader.

PORT ANGELES — Stacy Webb shut down the Buccaneer bats as the Roughriders won a battle of the Olympic League’s Nos. 2 and 3 teams Friday.
Mariah Frazier and Melanie Fors each hit solo homers in the bottom of the first inning, giving Webb all she would need in the Riders’ fourth straight win.
Webb pitched seven innings and held the Buccaneers to zero runs on two hits with 10 strikeouts and zero walks.
The Riders (11-1 in league and overall) travel to North Mason on Monday.

SEQUIM — The first-place Wolves (11-0, 14-0) rocked the Trojans in a five-inning Olympic League blowout Friday afternoon.
Sequim scored in every inning of the game cut short by the 10-run mercy rule.
Maddy Zbaraschuk was 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs and four RBIs, while sister Rylleigh Zbaraschuk went 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and a triple.
Demiree Briones went all five innings on the mound, striking out two while giving up five runs.

SEQUIM — The Wolves held on to their position in the Olympic League hierarchy with a dramatic extra-inning victory Friday.
Tyler Campbell’s hard-hit ground ball on a drawn-in Olympic infield resulted in an error by the shortstop, scoring Weston Royall from third base and handing the Wolves (9-3, 12-4) their ninth win in 11 games.
“We’re thrilled to still be within a half game of the league [title] right now,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said. “It’s such a good league, and I’m real proud of the kids for hanging tough with these teams.”
Jake Hudson (4-1) earned his fourth win in relief for the Wolves in the past two weeks, giving up two earned runs in the final four innings.
“We’ve really found a great role for him,” Ditlefsen said of the knuckleballer. “He follows our hard throwers and gets that knuckleball over for strikes.
“He doesn’t strike anybody out — he’s had one strikeout all year — but they put the ball in play and it’s hard to get a really good swing at it.”
Isaac Yamamoto went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two stolen bases to lead the Sequim bats.
Sequim plays at Port Townsend on Monday.

With the loss, Port Angeles (6-6 in league and overall) dropped into a tie for the fifth and final playoff position with North Mason.
Port Angeles will host those very same Bulldogs on Monday in a game that may go a long way toward deciding the Riders’ postseason fate.

PORT ANGELES— The Rider girls took on Jenny Grauberger (the entire Redskins team) and won Friday in an Olympic League showdown.
Port Angeles won with a team score of 321, while Grauberger was match medalist for the fifth straight time with a 46 in nine holes of action.
The Riders were led by senior Madison Baumann, who shot a 55.
