Power slowly going on across windblown Peninsula

Some homes east and west of Port Angeles remained without electricity Sunday night as Clallam County Public Utility District employees continued to repair damage by Friday’s windstorm. In Jefferson County, a utility spokesman said all but isolated customers of Puget Sound Energy had power restored by early Sunday evening.

The same situation held true in Port Angeles, according to a city utility dispatcher.

In Clallam County’s West End, “we’re making some really good headway now,” said Quimby Moon, a Clallam PUD dispatcher, on Sunday evening.

Crews cleared a major hurdle at about 4 a.m. Sunday when they extricated a transmission line serving the Joyce and Piedmont substations plus a distribution line from the Elwha River.

“That was quite a project,” said Moon.

PUD problem areas

A PUD Web site said other problem areas included:

* Upper Monroe and Upper Deer Park Roads east of Port Angeles.

* Isolated areas west of Port Angeles, including Wasankari, Dan Kelly, Eden Valley, Freshwater Bay and Oxenford roads, Dodger Lane and parts of Place Road.

* The Reddick, Cameron and Airport roads areas.

* Areas around Dempsey, Grauel Ramapo, Bishop and Miller Roads, plus Shadow Lane.

Jefferson in `good shape’

In Jefferson County, “We’re really in good shape,” said Grant Ringel of Puget Sound Energy.

Outages remained in scattered locations, he said, and for some people who would need electricians to fix problems on private property.

The urban growth area west of Port Angeles would likely have power restored early Sunday night, said city dispatcher Bob Williams.

“We’re pretty much done,” he said, although the utility still had about 100 items on a “go check list.”

The PUD said people without power should turn off their heaters and appliances and all but one or two lights. This will help prevent overloads when power is restored.

The PUD said it will try to update its telephone and online advisory every four hours.

The message can be heard by dialing 360-452-9771 and pressing 1, or by visiting the utility’s Web site, clallampud.net.
