A Poulsbo company is the apparent low bidder for the state Department of Transportation’s massive graving yard and Hood Canal Bridge project set to begin construction later this summer.
“This is exciting,” project manager Ron Lewis said at Transportation’s headquarters in Olympia after the bids were opened in a packed room Wednesday morning.
“This project’s sheer size was one of the reasons I took this job.”
Kiewit-General of Poulsbo. a joint operation of Kiewit Building Group and General Construction, submitted the apparent low bid of $204 million on Wednesday.
The project includes building the Port Angeles graving yard — big enough to hold five Navy battleships side by side — then using it to build pontoons and concrete anchors for the eastern half replacement of the 42-year-old Hood Canal Bridge, which links Jefferson and Kitsap counties.
