Potholder sales benefit no-kill shelter

The potholders made by Peninsula Friends of Animals volunteers really get around.

They were at the Greywolf Holiday Bazaar earlier this month and at the Down-Home Bazaar at Sequim High School last weekend.

This coming weekend, they will be found for sale at the Sequim Prairie Grange and the Vern Burton Community Center.

The potholders come in sets of two for $12.

All proceeds benefit the Peninsula Friends of Animals, a nonprofit no-kill shelter that takes in cats and, on a smaller scale, finds foster homes and adopts out dogs as well.

The handmade pot holder fundraiser was started in January 2007 by two women: Lori Miller and Carol Gearey.

It since has grown to a group of woman who compile kits for the potholders and take them home to churn them out.

Each kit contains a 9-inch fabric square designed top, a coordinating back side, flannel in three colors to create a colorful design on the back side and a border fabric, and a heat-shield center.

Variety of colors, themes

The colors and designs are varied, ranging from animal themes to kitchen and garden images.

They are on sale year round at several offices in the area and also can be found at bazaars and fairs.

On Saturday, they will be sold at the Sequim Prairie Grange’s 33rd annual Handmade Christmas Fair.

The fair will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the grange hall at 290 Macleary Road and will offer more than 30 vendors of handmade holiday gifts, a bake table and lunch.

That Saturday and the following Sunday, they also will be available at the Vern Burton Christmas Fair, which will offer more than 40 vendors and raffle drawings.

The fair will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

On Dec. 10, the potholders will be among the crafts offered by 30 vendors at the Trinity United Church Christmas Lane Fair.

The fair will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church at 100 S. Blake Road.

The potholders also can be found at the following businesses:

■ Hair Trix Salon, 21 Valley Center Place in Carlsborg.

■ The state Department of Labor and Industries office at 1605 E. Front St., Suite C, Port Angeles.

■ The Peninsula Friends of Animals Safe Haven Shelter, 257509 E. U.S. Highway 101, between Sequim and Port Angeles and between Shore and Barr roads.

■ Red Rooster Grocery, 1341⁄2 W. Washington St., Sequim.
