Ports’ officials differ on California company’s length of ships

PORT TOWNSEND — Officials from two port authorities disagree about the size of ships a California shipping company is considering building in a yet to be named Pacific Northwest city.

Port of Port Townsend Executive Director Larry Crockett and Tim Caldwell, executive director of the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce confirm Port Townsend is one of the places being considered for a shipyard by Santa Maria Shipping LLC of Santa Rosa, Calif.

But, Crockett said the shipping company is looking for a place to build ships 300 to 350 feet in length, not the 600 feet reported by a Port of Olympia official Monday.

Port of Olympia officials told the Peninsula Daily News Monday that Santa Maria Shipping LLC is looking for a site to build ships up to 600 feet in length in addition to a shipyard it plans to build in Olympia.

Phone calls to Santa Maria Shipping LLC have not been returned this week.

Crockett said the larger ships haven’t been discussed during meetings between the Port and officials of the shipping company.

An agreement between the company and the Port of Olympia was reached earlier this year to construct 300-foot ships there.
