PORT ANGELES — The city of Port Angeles will begin re-lining the sanitary sewers beneath Francis Street on Monday.
Francis Street will be closed between First and Second streets on Monday and Tuesday.
During the project, the city plans to rehabilitate more than 3,000 linear feet of sewer mains which were installed more than 100 years ago, city officials said.
The clay, concrete and brick-lined pipes are losing structural integrity due to cracking, surface erosion and failed joints and allowing groundwater to leak in which can cause sinkholes or other problems.
Crews will install cured-in-place pipe lining to restore the structural integrity of the sanitary sewer main and reduce groundwater infiltration.
Crews also will replace manhole covers and frames as part of the work.
The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of October, will extend from Caroline Street to Sixth Street with block-by-block closures in the area that crews are at work.
Partial closures, controlled by flaggers, also may be encountered.
No closures are expected on First or Front streets, city officials said.
