Port Townsend’s Mountain View Pool back in shape after series of closures due to equipment issues

PORT TOWNSEND — After several repairs, the Mountain View Pool is back in shape for the summer season, staff members say.

“Everything seems to be running well,” said Seth Leighton, the interim manager of Port Townsend’s only public pool, located at 1919 Blaine St.

“It doesn’t mean that we can’t have another incident, but the repairs seem to be working the way we want them to.”

The municipal pool was closed from mid-November to early January for boiler replacement.

Since then, it has been closed for short periods three times because of equipment failure.

The last repair was to the air filtration system in early March.

The 50-year-old pool has been repaired extensively over the past few years. The liner and the roof have been replaced.

Swim instruction is beginning this week as pool personnel prepare for summer activities, Leighton said.

Four new lifeguards who double as teachers have been hired and are being trained.

Leighton, former assistant pool manager, is filling in until a new manager is hired.

Anji Scalf Cael left the position after more than five years to return to school, Leighton said.

Application review is scheduled to begin April 17.

Leighton said he has applied.

This week also marks the first anniversary of Swim Free Sunday, which takes place the second Sunday of every month.

The free swims are sponsored through a collaboration between the JeffCo Aquatic Coalition, the city of Port Townsend, the YMCA and the weekly Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader.

The free swim is in two parts: In an adult-only component from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., the pool is set up for laps, water walking and deepwater exercise. All-ages activity follows from 2:15 to 5 p.m.
