PORT TOWNSEND – The city of Port Townsend won the 2024 award for Local Government Excellence in Community Sustainability by the International City/County Management Association.
The community sustainability award is given to government programs that demonstrate innovation, excellence and success in balancing that community’s social, economic, environmental and cultural needs.
The award recognizes the city’s financial sustainability initiative, a multiyear strategic effort to map out pathways for the city to meet ongoing and evolving community needs over the long term.
“I’m delighted for the city to be recognized on the national stage, yet again, for excellence and innovation in our work with our community,” City Manager John Mauro said. “It was a real team effort and the challenge stimulated us to work even more collaboratively and courageously together.”
The city also received a Strategic Leadership and Governance Award from the association in 2021.
The association serves more than 11,000 professional city and county managers along with other employees in local governments.
The association recognizes governments in five areas: community equity and inclusion, community health and safety, community partnerships, community sustainability and strategic leadership and governance.
The association also recognizes individuals annually for excellence in six areas.
