PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Redskins are sending two teams to the 2A state tournament starting today.
The boys and girls basketball teams play first-round games at the Yakima SunDome in the double-elimination tourney.
Port Townsend’s boys play at 2 p.m.
The boys (16-7) match up fairly well, at least by size, to their opponent, No. 5-ranked Blaine (20-4). Blaine is the No. 1 seed from the Northwest District.
Three years ago Port Townsend girls lost 58-32 to East Valley of Yakima in the first round of the state tournament.
Today the Redskins (17-6) have a chance to get even.
Game time is 9 a.m. at the Yakima SunDome in the opening round of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington 2A Girls Basketball Championship tournament.
“We owe them one,” said Port Townsend coach John Stroeder, also the coach in 1999, the last time the Redskins were at state.
“We’re going to go down there and have some fun and who knows, maybe surprise some people,” Stroeder said.
