Port Townsend: Sights, sounds, smells of Jeffco Expo sensed across fairgrounds; more today

PORT TOWNSEND — Revving engines, rubber burning and dirt churning — it must be Jefferson County Expo time again.

The expo continues today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4902 Landes St.

Saturday featured the return of autocross to the narrow, twisting racetrack built on the north end of the fairgrounds.

Spectators were welcome to join in — riding with professional drivers as they took Mini Coopers, Ferraris and Ford Mustangs around the winding track at breakneck speeds.

On the south end of the fairgrounds was Ron Leach, taking people aboard his souped-up monster truck as he hurtled across obstacles with his truck’s 6-foot ground clearance, and sent dust flying into the air as spun “doughnuts” with the vehicle’s four-wheel steering.

4-by-4 truck racing

In between the events where the audience became the crew, mud was in order as lightweight four-wheel-drive trucks raced each other on parallel dirt tracks.

But there’s a cleaner, slower-paced side to the Jeffco Expo, too.

At the entrance to the Expo, Lorenzo Lamas, the motorcycle-riding star of the 1990s TV series “Renegade,” was signing autographs.

Next to him, former Playboy Playmate Barbara Ann Moore talked to a handful of fans, but kept most of her attention on a small black cashmere goat named Bam Bam, owned by Siana Wineland of Chimacum.

Several motorcycle riders struck up a conversation with Lamas, now starring in the CBS soap, “The Bold and the Beautiful,” about his role on “Renegade.”

Lamas said a show reunion could be in the works with a movie planned.

The celebrity guests will be on hand today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Deeper into the fairgrounds, 75 classic and cutting-edge cars and trucks lined the fairgrounds, their owners sitting nearby waiting to show passers-by the immaculate paint jobs, clean engines and polished chrome.

Booths are set up to provide retail space for 45 vendors, including food, crafts and, of course, auto parts.
