PORT TOWNSEND — A rudder problem caused the ferry MV Klickitat to be out of service all day Monday, slowing travelers going between Port Townsend and Keystone on Whidbey Island.
A repair crew found the problem after the ferry began vibrating during a morning trip.
The MV Quinault operated throughout the day, but motorists accustomed to two ferries during the summer were left with an unusually long wait.
Overflow ferry traffic was lined up all day on Gaines and Water streets by the Tides Inn and office of the Peninsula Daily News.
There was no estimate of how long it will take to fix the vessel, Washington State Ferries spokeswoman Pat Patterson said Monday evening.
Patterson did not know how long travelers were having to wait to board the Quinault.
Divers could be seen going into the water around the ferry to examine its hull.
If the Klickitat cannot be repaired by today, another ferry may be called into service in order to have two vessels on the run, Patterson said.
