PORT TOWNSEND — Generations of former classmates gathered Saturday night to renew acquaintances, talk over old times and recognize the newest members — the Class of 2005 — at the 108th annual meeting of the Port Townsend High School Alumni Association.
“This is one of the oldest high school alumni associations in Washington that still meets every year,” said Marlene Colvin, president.
The annual dinner dance, held Saturday at the Elks Lodge, attracted 225 alumni, including Ruth Short, who graduated in 1933, the year the bank in town failed.
“We didn’t have a class picture and we had to make our own robes,” Short said.
Bonzo De Leo, Class of ’40, gave the toast to absent classmates, noting that he was in a car accident a month ago and thought he would be making the toast to himself. The men also toasted the women, and the women raised their glasses to the men.
Tom Opsted, Class of ’49, of Edmonds announced that his son, also named Tom, has been hired as the Port Townsend School District’s new superintendent.
“I’m real proud that he’s coming here,” said Opsted, whose father worked for Standard Oil.
