PORT TOWNSEND — Following a special meeting Monday, Port of Port Townsend commissioners awarded a $1.5 million contract to Jefferson County-based Seton Construction for development of airport infrastructure, taxi lanes and hangar sites.
“We’re hopeful that within 30 days they will be moving earth,” Port Executive Director Larry Crockett said Monday after the commissioners’ unanimous approval.
Crockett warned that once work starts, about 2,000 dump truck loads of soil will have to be taken out via the Jefferson County International Airport entrance at Highway 19.
The project proposes grading land and installing infrastructure and taxiways to support 65 hangars, configured in eight buildings to hold six to 12 aircraft.
Aside from Seton’s bid, two others were submitted to the Port in June.
The apparent low bidder, Severson Construction of Seattle, at $1.3 million, was ruled as “nonresponsive” following Federal Aviation Administration bidding guidelines and state law.
