PORT TOWNSEND — A winter “day camp” is taking place at the Port Townsend Pool to give kids something to do over the holiday break.
The Pirates and Mermaids Day Camp will operate between 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. on Dec. 26-27 and 30-31 at the pool, located at Mountain View Commons, 1919 Blaine St.
Several activities are planned to keep the kids busy and amused.
Kids will learn how to build and float a boat, make a mermaid costume, learn to swim underwater, dive for gold, play pirate kickball, launch water balloons and paint faces.
And, of course, there will be plenty of cannonballs.
The cost is $8 per child per day or all four days for $25.
The camp is open to kids from 5 to 14 years old.
Kids are asked to bring a lunch, a towel, a swimsuit and dry clothes.
Pool manager Anji Scalf said the camp was planned at the last minute, “and we really want to get the word out.”
The pool was repaired this year and reopened with a new liner and a renovated deck, although the heater is still in need of replacement.
Aside from the times when the heater isn’t working, “the water is perfect,” Scalf said.
Scalf predicted a healthy 2014 year for the pool, even as recreation funding for other activities is uncertain.
“We’ve already had our cutbacks, so we know how to work with less,” she said.
