PORT TOWNSEND — Declining enrollment in the Port Townsend School District and recommendations from a study conducted by the Washington Association of School Administrators has led school officials to consider closing — and selling — Mountain View Elementary School.
Interestingly enough, the city of Port Townsend has chosen a portion of Mountain View Elementary property as the ideal site for a new police station.
The site would provide a central location and offer the station safety from natural disasters, city officials say.
Meanwhile, an architectural firm is in the midst of a study to determine the status of the school district’s facilities and architectural needs.
Any decision concerning the Mountain View school site at 1919 Blaine St. has been halted at least until the facilities study has concluded, probably mid-May, said Port Townsend School District Superintendent Tom Opstad.
“We’re looking at different studies and coming up with a longterm plan,” Opstad said.
“If we continue on our current pattern of enrollment, yes, we will have to do something.”
