Today’s the day that a piece of Port Townsend history will be placed on the auction block.
The auction of Manresa Castle on Sheridan Street takes place at 4 p.m., with registration starting at 2 p.m. The buy-in is $100,000 in certified funds.
The 112-year-old castle was built in 1892 as residence for Port Townsend’s first mayor. Jesuit priests purchased the castle in 1927 who converted the building into a training college. In 1968, the castle was sold to new owners who transformed it into a hotel.
The castle features 38 rooms and two turret suites, a library, lounge, breakfast and banquet rooms.
Current owner Lena Humber decided to sell the castle after her husband’s death two years ago.
The winning bidder will have to pay 10 percent of the price today. The castle’s assessed value is $1.9 million.
