PORT TOWNSEND — With its bright colors and retro rounded corners, a 37-year-old bus from the Summer of Love is changing the image of Jefferson Transit.
In a past life, “1967,” as transit authority officials call it in homage to the year it was built, was a tour bus in California’s Yosemite National Park.
After a $140,000 refurbishing, the coach is in better-than-new condition.
“What we got, for what I consider a bargain price, is a truly unique vehicle,” General Manager Dave Turissini said.
A new bus costs around $275,000, he said.
The yellow and blue retro bus will be Jefferson Transit’s flagship for the next two decades.
A redesigned agency logo features 1967, replacing the two-dimension sketch of a tree and water.
The logo is prominently displayed on new bus stop signs being installed around the county.
