Money from the federal Department of Homeland Security continues to pour into Jefferson County firefighting agencies in the form of grants for equipment.
The newest grant is $246,106 to the Port Townsend Fire Department that will be used to buy equipment for firefighters, help fund health and safety programs, enhance emergency medical services programs and conduct fire education and prevention programs.
The department requested the money to replace outdated fire helmets as well as clothing worn while fighting structure fires. The new equipment is mandated by federal worker safety laws.
The city added $27,346 to the funding from Homeland Security in a mandated 10 percent match.
Earlier this week 88 mobile and portable radios with similar frequencies were distributed to Jefferson County fire districts with money provided by Homeland Security.
