PORT TOWNSEND — Enterprising 11-year-olds Alana McCleese and Karley Caseber recently launched their own line of sugar scrubs and bubbly bath salts.

The girls, who will both attend Port Townsend’s Blue Heron Middle School in the fall, came up with the idea after attending an AAUW-sponsored conference, “Expanding Your Horizons,” last spring.

Market research

Helped by Alana’s mom, Tina Flores-McCleese, the girls tested recipes and products and did market research to come up with their Chica Fresca line, which is available in five scents — including cucumber melon, coconut lemongrass and pink grapefruit — and which retails for $12 for a 12-ounce jar.

The products are available at Getables, 810 Water St., Port Townsend; at chicafresca.wordpress.com; or by visiting facebook.com/ChicaFrescaSugar ScrubsBathSalts.

A portion of the proceeds will go to Center Valley Animal Rescue of Quilcene and the Jefferson County Fund for Women & Girls, Flores-McCleese said.

The girls received assistance on logo design from Jennifer Hemsley, product design from Jenny Mayeda, supplier information from Coastal Living, and bath and beauty tips from Pat Grainger.
