PORT TOWNSEND — The Menzies Project, a Port Townsend-based recreation, research and educational cruise business, has permanently suspended its operations effective July 13 after three years of providing tours around Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
“We just have not been getting the passenger numbers needed to cover operational expenses and so this difficult decision was made,”‘ project manager Michelle McConnell said in her Wednesday community address sent by e-mail.
She added that all pending tours are canceled.
Pre-paid passengers will be notified and given refunds, she said.
“Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, and we want to thank all our passengers, staff, business partners and the community for their support over the past three and a half years,” she wrote.
The Menzies Project began as a partnership with the Port Townsend Marine Science Center in 2002 and has operated independently as a branch of the private research Marine Resources Consultants since 2003.
