PORT TOWNSEND — Mayor Kees Kolff and Nora Porter with the Fort Worden Advisory Committee’s parking fee subcommittee go before Jefferson County commissioners this morning with a plan to elimate parking fees at five state parks next year and in 2005.
The commissioners are scheduled to hear the proposal at 8 a.m. at the County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St.
They will be asked to contribute $10,000 to ensure continued free parking at Fort Worden State Park.
The Fort Worden Advisory Committee is seeking $60,000 from the community to keep visitors from having to pay a $5 parking fee at the popular state park and conference center.
A total of $25,000 was raised this to keep parking free at bay this year.
Fort Worden is believed to be the only state park at which the surrounding community subsidized the parking fee to protect the region’s tourism economy.
